The Artist's Finger Nail Pairings

Tim Hawkinson -
Tim incorporates his own body into his art in some very interesting ways. Using parts of his body like fingernails, he has created some very compelling work. I like the idea of seeing yourself in a unique way and turning that idea into a self portrait. He also incorporates music into his art and explores it's connection to the body.

Kiki Smith -
Kiki works in a verity of mediums but I really enjoy her figurative sculptures the most. There is a simple and sweet quality to her works that is quite touching. She has challenged the way the female body is viewed in much of her art work and spirituality is a strong theme throughout.

back to the wall,  2011
tulle and paint
Caroline Broadhead -
Although Caroline started her career as a jewelry maker, she has made a name for herself as a contemporary artist with her work in textiles and more recently glass work.  I'm particularly enthralled by her sires of tulle dress forms. They have been referred to by many as "ethereal". The absence of the body in these works is what makes them so intriguing. It is very interesting to ponder the connection between our bodies and fabric and how they effect one another.

Remote Control I, 1989
Aluminum, canvas,motorized wheels,
casters, batteries, video
Height: 150 cm

Jana Sterbak -
Jana is well known for the feminist views she addresses in artwork. She has made some extremely strong statements with her work that are bold and provocative. Remote Control is simple but has such a clear, strong statement about our bodies and fashion, trapped and often not in control

Cindy Sherman -
Cindy uses photography to examine women and there roles in history as well as how they are depicted in 20th century pop culture. She photography herself in these various roles and the result is often humorous but also very thought provoking.
